Top 5 North American Matches October 9, 2010Posted by skribbel24 in WWE.
Taken from Austin101’s list of 50 top wrestling matches in North America.
5) Randy “Macho Man” Savage vs. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat from WrestleMania III
The fifteen minute spectacle that inspired the likes of Jericho, Edge, Foley, the Hardyz and many more. You see, what Vince McMahon’s company lacked was workrate. Tito Santana, Bret Hart, Steamboat and Savage were about all they had around this time. In one of the best anticipated matches these guys delivered this memorable classic nearly 25 years ago that had 19 nearfalls. Savage’s promo’s before the match were legendary and Randy did such great job of making Ricky look like a god. Not like he needed it. Steamboat is Steamboat.
4) Ric Flair vs. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat from Wrestlewar ’89
Ric Flair, Triple H and many more probably consider THIS the greatest match of all time. It’s not like their not justified in doing so, but it ranks fourth here. It’s a 5 star classic of course. Nothing is wrong with it at all. The chemistry is evident perhaps best in the ’89 trilogy during this one but that by any means doesn’t mean it was the best. It’s one of those matches you watch everyday and realize “This is why I love this business.” That can’t be denied.
3) Ric Flair vs. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat from Chi-Town Rumble ’89
Ricky Steamboat making three consecutive appearances in the top 5 matches says enough about him. Behind Bret, Benoit and Liger, he is the fourth best inside the squared circle as far as I’m concerned. This match did more in only 23 minutes then the all the others I truly feel. This is fantastic in every way and the best match in company history and both men’s career.
2) Bret “Hitman” Hart vs. “The Rocket” Owen Hart from WrestleMania X
For years I’ve considered this the best match of all time. From a technical standpoint, it very well may be. Same with the story. You could tell parts in this match happened in the Dungeon when both were young. The feud helped matters. It was legendary. Owen even got the upset win! This was an opening match which is just mind-boggling. I really can’t stress how great this is, it’s just a match everyone needs to see and if you haven’t, you’re missing out. Big time. This match will always be #1 to be in many areas, just not on this particular list.
1) Bret “Hitman” Hart vs. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin from WrestleMania 13
The very reason this match takes its place as the greatest of all time is the significance. I always knew its significance, I watched it live and was amazed, I saw Austin rise to heights never seen since Hogan. I saw the entire business change from the double-switch. Austin and Bret and perhaps the entire company would agree it’s the greatest of all time. I believe this match is #1 for every reason imaginable. It’s Mania. It’s the greatest rivalry of all time. Kick started an era. The image of Austin passing out to the Sharpshooter in his blood. The incredible blade job. The Double Switch. The Rise of Austin and him limping out to chants. Non-Stop action from bell to bell. Both guys in their prime and chemistry being top notch. Among the several others.
